ABOUT The McGrath Foundation
Established in 2005, by Jane McGrath and her Australian Cricketing husband Glenn, the McGrath Foundation aims to both raise money to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in rural and regional areas across Australia while at the same time educating younger women of the importance of being breast aware.
Jane was only 31 when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer and it wasn’t until she was re-diagnosed in 2003 that she first had access to a breast care nurse. At the time, Jane said it was like having someone holding her hand through one of the worst nightmares of her life. Jane’s breast care nurse allowed her to be Jane McGrath – the friend, the mother and the wife. She was also someone who could give Jane informed and knowledgeable answers to the many questions she had. It was at this stage then that Jane and Glenn envisioned a time when every woman diagnosed with breast cancer would have access to a breast care nurse and thus the Foundation’s first objective was formed.
The McGrath Foundation’s second objective then is to educate young women about the importance of being breast aware with everyone associated with the charity feeling passionately about empowering women under 40 to take control of their health. There is no doubt that early detection saves lives and so the Foundation also focuses on encouraging young women to know their breasts and to see their doctor as soon as possible should they detect any changes.
Tragically Jane passed away in June 2008 but she has left an enduring legacy that will ensure many women and families will be grateful for her generosity of spirit over the years to come.
